Lets examine some other reasons why many people today have not succeeded in building their own houses.
Lack of Information- Information is powerful. It is all you need to take meaningful steps. If you do not have adequate information about any issue chances are high that you will gamble.
Wrong Advice - If you truly desire to build your own house, I strongly advice that you move with house owners that can share their experiences with you.
Joblessness - Many do not have jobs and many do have but the income is near meaningless. 90% of these group have not look for other sources of income aside from their regular active income. It has become old fashion to rely on one source of income. Get multiple source of income. In my subsequent posts I will share with you some steps you can take to ensure multiple sources of income.
Compulsive Spending - Many people postpone building their houses because the channels of their expenses are so many and even the competing liabilities are more than the income; some have transfered this duty to their children who are still students! If you cannot build in your own time what make you think your children will? Please leave a legacy and not a liability to your children.
Pessimism - Many are pessimists believing that it is not possible for them to buy land and own a house. Such people will stay in Lagos or a particular location all their lives, and they retire and become useless to themselves, to their children and the society.
Financial Indiscipline - Many people and perhaps including YOU, lack financial discipline needed to carry out a successful building project. They are unwilling to sacrifice and pay the price of discipline by cutting one luxury here and there and to reduce those useless telephone calls they make regularly.
Procrastination - To some people, it has always been neaxt year 'I will do something' and it is over five years now but they are yet to take any step towards actualizing that dream. Yet they have changed about two cars since they bought the land!
The worst of all these set of people are those waiting for the right time that will never come. Now, is the right time. Start with that seed in your hand. Most genuine land owners willing to sell land will accept instalment payment (I can assist you in this regard).
WHY YOU MUST OWN A HOUSE
Building a house should not be seen as a luxury to anybody or class of persons because almost everyone in the local setting owned a house before urbanization started. Infact one of the criteria for being a real man in those days is to have your own house. The political icon of Africa Nelson Mandela said ' if a man has not built a house, he has not got a home'.
If animals or lower creations could be homely by nature why should men seek for anything less? Birds build nests, lions live in customized dens, rats drill holes in other to have a place to lay their heads, humans should do better than animals who only act by instincts.
The lesson here is that if you want to build a house do not look at the extent of development before acquiring a land, particularly if you are building for the future. I have livde and worked in Lagos all my adult life and I know what it takes to acquire a plot of land, source for cheap building materials and how to manage the workmen on the project from foundation to roofing and finishing. It is this experience I will be sharing with you on this blog.
The first mistake people make is that once you buy a plot of land, you must build it from foundation to finish. This is very wrong. Once you start, build at your pace but ensure you work on it regularly. However, nothing stops anyone from completing it at your desired schedule if the resources are readily available. By the grace of God, my first personal house was completed from foundation to roofing and finishing in four months.
Every man that ever built a house did not do it by accident. It all began as a dream and burning desire to actualize this dream and when the opportunity came for them to act they did not miss it.
My desire to own a house came as a result of unforgettable embarassments I saw my parents suffer in the hands of shylock landlords while I was younger, coupled with the inconvenience of living with all manner of strange people in the same house as a tenant.
The last thing I wish to mention here in this episode is that if you truly desire to build your house, you must have a plan. That is why every house itself have a building plan. When you plan to have a house with a clear picture of how you intend to accomplish this task, every other thing will begin to fall into place. It is only this kind of planning that enables you to work harder and also change your spending habits.
I got an architect friend to draw my desired building plan for me in 2009 even before I bought the first land. I brooded over this plan. I prayed over it regularly. I desired to actualize it. Finally, in the first quarter of 2011 work started on it and three months later the house became a physical reality.
